Typical artificial grass installations for outdoor replacing real grass will need a sub base built with drain rocks at about 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” thick depending on the regions: rainy areas will need thicker drain rock layer and less rainy areas can use less. Drain rocks need to be compacted at about 90% then with another top layer of finer materials such as decomposed granite to provide more solid (after compacting) and smooth surface to lay turf onto.
